With Mimi Hernandez, MS, RH (AHG)

Session 1: The Tasteful Herbalist- Every herbalist should begin with an understanding of taste and activity. You can tell a lot about whatan herb does both physically and energetically based on the way it tastes and feels in your mouth. What does astringent taste like? How does that tightening feeling lead to healing? What about herbs with an aromatic flavor, what do they all tend to have in common? We will learn how that bitter taste gets the juices flowing, the sour herbs can be awakening, and the spicy herbs, of course have a lot to tell us!

 Session 2. The Garden Herbalist- Let’s explore plants that are readily available and easy to grow in our gardens, Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Thyme, & Sage, for instance.  These lovely, easy to grow, and fragrant members of the Lamiaceae (Mint) family are just as versatile for health promotion as they are in the kitchen. Come and learn how these and other mints have been used traditionally for health and how scientific evidence supports many of these uses.

Session 3. The Kitchen Herbalist- Now we venture into the kitchen in search of medicinal ingredients.  Chocolate anyone? Cayenne, Garlic, Cinnamon, Turmeric, Black Pepper,Paprika… Did you know that these & other common household spices are great to have on hand for household ailments! Find out how to incorporate kitchen herbalism into your daily lifestyle to boost immunity and prevent heart disease, diabetes, arthritis.  

Session 4. The Winter Herbalist- This is the seasonal portion of our course where we will learn how to boost our mood and immunity to stay healthy through the winter months so we can take care of others as we learn to use herbs to manage cold, flu, and seasonal depression.

Session 5. The Topical Herbalist- There are countless ways to prepare herbs for topical use.  Learn how ease and prevent sun burn, pesky insect bites, poison ivy,eczema, acne, wounds, and other aggravating skin reactions.   Mimi shares her top ten herbs for topical use including comfrey, chamomile, calendula, plantain, and more!

 Session 6. The Medicine Making Herbalist- Time to make tinctures, vinegars, oils, salves, and glycerites!

 Session 7. The Weedy Herbalist- Dandelion, Violets, Plantain, Kudzu, Chickweed, Knotweed, and more Oh my!! Join us as we discuss how we can put these and other backyard “weeds” to good use. Many of these weed remedies are even supported by scientific evidence.  Make new allies with these abundantly available green friends!

Session 8. The Community Herbalist- Let’s discuss the most commonly utilized medicinal herbs in our communities.  Many of these are the herbs that are popular and available on market shelves and boast a tremendous amount of research!

About Mimi Hernandez

Mimi Hernandez, RH(AHG), MS, comes from a background as an herbalist and as an ethnobotanist. Her teachings weave together science, tradition, and intuition in ways that speak to diverse learning communities. In her home range, Appalachia, Mimi is probably best known for providing cultural heritage outreach to local mountain residents through mountain root lore. Mimi draws upon her rich ethnic background & the Latin American Granny healers in her life. She believes that the handing down of plant wisdom is essential and it is her life's work to advocate for traditional and professional herbal pathways while building cultural bridges of understanding. She has had the remarkable opportunity to honor this work through past and present leadership roles within various educational communities including a former appointment at Appalachian Center for Ethnobotanical Studies at Frostburg State University, a current position as the Executive Director of the American Herbalists Guild, and a founding member of the One World Healing Community.
